WOW, WOW, WOW!
Last Saturday, we headed to Hackney Town Hall for the beautiful wedding of Jane and Sum, which celebrated and embraced the intermingling of different cultural heritages and faiths. From capturing a Sikh ceremony to a Chinese tea ceremony and everything in-between, it was truly a colourful, multicultural wedding.
When we first met Jane and Sum in early 2023, we instantly clicked. We always ask our couples what drew them to us, for Jane and Sum, it was the fact that as two women of colour from different cultures and faiths, we know and understand how important representation is in all areas of life. Jane and Sum embodied everything that we value and treasure. As wedding photographers, we believe we have a responsibility to showcase the diversity of love and relationships in our work. Not only was it a celebration of love and commitment, Jane + Sum were committed to honouring the cultural representation of each other’s culture which we absolutely respected and adored.
Of course, being big foodies just like us, we instantly bonded over our love for food that’s part of our heritage(s). Like we do with most of our close friends, we ended up chatting about food endlessly (I mean, I guess we can’t help it considering our packages are named after our favourite dishes!).
A large part of the 2 of a kind approach, is getting to know our couples, finding out how they met, who proposed when and how, what they enjoy doing in their spare time and so on. We also offer the option of having our pre-consultation in-person at one of their favourite hangouts. It’s important that our couples feel comfortable around us so when it comes to the wedding day, they feel relaxed around us, as though we are simply ‘friends with cameras’.
East London Gurdwara and Hackney Town Hall
One of the things we noticed so early on was how excited everyone was seeing the different customs from both sides. Everyone was keen to participate and we loved how two families came together as it was symbolic of the two cultures – we loved capturing this.
What we also loved about this Chinese + Indian wedding is that the couple incorporated both personal, modern and fun touched which was combined with cultural traditions along the way. From serving sweet boa buns at the entrance of the Gurdwara to wearing traditional attires throughout the day.
At Hackney Town Hall, both Jane + Sum wore red traditional attire in preparation for the Chinese Tea ceremony. In Chinese tradition, the couple wear red to symbolise success, love, and honour. They both looked amazing!
There were such beautiful moments between Jane and Sum and their parents during the ceremony. There was so much laughter and joy shared by everyone in the room.
After the ceremony, we took Jane and Sum for some couple time aka portraits inside the beautiful art deco decor of Hackney Town Hall. Couple times are a wonderful way for the couple to take a break from the guests and spend some alone time together as husband and wife. This matches well with our relaxed photography approach, capturing those beautiful, intimate moments between them.
The wedding day ended with lots of dancing between the two families which was kickstarted by Jane and Sum’s first dance to Liverpool’s FC song ‘You’ll never walk alone’.
Thank you Jane + Sum for choosing us to be part of your day. Also, a massive thank you to the team at Hackney Town Hall for being absolutely fabulous and helpful on the lead up to the wedding day and the day itself!
